Canberra, it’s time to BlocHaus!
Hey Canberra! Even if the weather is starting to cool we heard whispers of a new little hot spot and we couldn’t wait to share, things are about to get rocky! To give us the insider tips, we caught up with Duncan Brown, to learn about Canberra’s newest and rockiest hub called BlocHaus went from vision to reality. If you haven’t heard about BlocHaus, then keep reading to ensure you’re up-to-date with Canberra’s talk of the town and the let the bouldering begin!
Tell us a little bit about your latest project, BlocHaus, what exactly is BlocHaus?
BlocHaus is the brainchild of my good friends, Marty & Inga, who have really brought the very best of modern bouldering gyms to the nations capital. Beautifully designed, community focused, with modern fitness classes and facilities and the most enticing modern style bouldering walls in the country. They really have set a new gold standard for this kind of facility in Australia.
How did your path end up leading you to being involved in opening a bouldering centre?
Well, my business, Athlete By Choice, has for some time now been solely an online coaching and training service and has needed to move into a high quality climbing gym in order to grow and move forward and partnering with BlocHaus has allowed us to now provide our services from within a truly world class training facility.
What kind of community are you hoping to create at the centre?
The BlocHaus family as a whole really wants to strive to create a space where all members of the community, whether those brand new to the sport of climbing and experiencing it for the first time, or those dedicated and serious climbers of all climbing genres, can come together and enjoy a friendly and open community vibe that engenders participation, sharing and encouragement for all.
What advice do you have for any first-time boulders out there?
Bouldering in a modern indoor facility like BlocHaus really is one of those sports that anyone can come and try out and enjoy. With the changing trends towards lower angled climbing surfaces and movement based climbing rather than the purely strength based climbing of the past the focus shifts towards physical problem solving over feats of strength and fitness which ultimately allow a new climber to spend hours enjoying the challenges of rock climbing in a safe and enjoyably challenging way. So if you haven’t tried it yet- get to your local bouldering gym and give it a go!
Why do you think there was a need to create this centre for Canberrans?
Canberra has always been a fairly active and fitness conscious city and the style of gym the BlocHaus is fits very well into existing activity based recreating mentality that Canberrans have and we think the community here is going to thoroughly enjoy their experience at BlocHaus.
